What your vet needs is to know the type of chocolate and how much was likely consumed. If it is not clear how much chocolate was actually consumed, the largest possible amount should be determined based on the amount of candy / cake etc. which is missing.

It takes almost four days for the effect of chocolate to work its way through the dog's system. If the chocolate alone is eaten, it is possible to induce vomiting. Otherwise, they need hospitalization and support. It is common for clinics to receive phone calls about pets found to have consumed a chocolate product and the owner wishes to know if the amount was toxic. To answer such questions, it is necessary to know the weight of the pet, the type of chocolate and the amount of chocolate. Chocolate calculators are available at most veterinary practices and can determine relatively quickly if the pet needs to vomit immediately. Click here to find such a chocolate toxicity calculator.

Chocolate is directly toxic because it contains methylxanthines.
